PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre

28 Years

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), serving  as the regional office of the World Health Organization (WHO), designated the University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) a PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Clinical Training in Health Promotion Nursing in 1997.

This prestigious designation recognizes our commitment to health promotion research and global education initiatives, particularly in the Americas. Each collaborating centre focuses on a specific field in support of the World Health Organization. We are proud to be one of only 44 nursing schools worldwide to hold this designation. Our current designation is valid through December 2027.

Collaborating Centre in Nursing and Midwifery

U-M School of Nursing is an active member of the Global Network of WHO Collaborating Centres in Nursing and Midwifery, working with WHO to advance global health, nursing education and capacity building. Our centre supports PAHO/WHO in enhancing midwifery education and strengthening nursing capacity for primary health care.

One of our notable initiatives, the Maternity Waiting Home Toolkit Website, offers a web-based resource on best practices, providing protocols and resources to improve maternal and newborn health. This toolkit is available in both English and Spanish.
