For information regarding our required prerequisite courses, please check out our Sophomore Transfer Steps to Success page.

Students are required to take the following prerequisite courses:

  • English Composition
  • Introductory Psychology
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Organic Biochemistry*
  • Anatomy and Physiology*
  • Statistics*
  • Electives

*Statistics, Organic Biochemistry, and Anatomy & Physiology courses must be taken within the past 5 years.

Competitive applicants have at least one semester of graded college-level coursework, including Anatomy & Physiology and/or Organic Biochemistry at the time of their application submission. Competitive applicants have earned a B (equivalent to a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale) or better in required prerequisite courses. Admitted transfer students must earn a C (equivalent to a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale) or higher for a prerequisite course to meet the minimum transfer requirements.

If offered admission, students will have until the beginning of fall term to complete all required prerequisite courses. While students may apply with prerequisites in-progress or planning to complete, we highly recommend students complete these courses as early as possible as to not interfere with their U-M on-campus summer courses.

Note to current U-M Ann Arbor students: Organic Biochemistry (BIOLCHEM 212) is only available during the fall term and Anatomy & Physiology (NURS 210 + NURS 211) is only offered during the winter term. Please meet with your current academic advisor and discuss your desire to transfer as early as possible to ensure there is space available in these courses. Please also review the  Summer Courses Policy for Sophomore Transfer Students.

Licensure Disclosure

This program was designed to satisfy educational prerequisites to RN licensure in the state of Michigan. It has not been determined whether educational prerequisites to licensure would be satisfied in other states. If you plan to seek licensure in a state other than Michigan please consult with the appropriate board of nursing to ensure compliance.

The School of Nursing appreciates that our applicants come from a variety of communities, schools and experiences. As such, our approach to reviewing applications is an individualized and holistic one. The U-M School of Nursing looks for students who show solid academic strength, involvement in extracurricular activities and demonstrate a genuine interest in the field of nursing.

Educational Background

Applicants must review the above requirements regarding prerequisite coursework, and must submit a supplemental form by the February 1st application deadline. At least one semester of graded college coursework must be completed at the time of application.

We do not have a minimum GPA requirement, however, a minimum grade of C (equivalent to a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale) is required for all prerequisite courses. A higher grade, however, will make a more competitive applicant. More competitive applicants will have several prerequisites completed at the time of application, however it is not required.

Extracurricular Activities

We encourage students to have exposure to the healthcare field. This can be done through working or volunteering in a health care setting. Examples of this include job shadowing a nurse, volunteering at a blood drive, volunteering in a nursing home, doctor’s office, etc. Another way that students can demonstrate their interest in the nursing field is by scheduling an informational interview with a nurse. Informational interviews can be done virtually by holding a one-on-one conversation with a nurse through a webinar, phone conversation or another medium to help you better understand the specifics of the profession.

Many of our students are involved in extracurricular activities, clubs, student organizations and community service; competitive applicants will address these experiences throughout their application.

Essays

Good communication skills are vital to finding success in the nursing field. Our most successful nursing students have the ability to synthesize information learned in class and apply it to clinical experience. Your essay is your opportunity to tell your own story in your own voice. We encourage you to utilize essays to communicate your unique attributes while supplementing the other information in your application. Most importantly, we want to see your essays communicate genuine interest in the field of nursing and the U-M School of Nursing.

International applicants planning to meet prerequisite or elective requirements for the sophomore transfer BSN program by transferring credits earned at a foreign institution must be prepared to provide a certified English translation of their transcript and course syllabus for review.

Undergraduate applicants can find language test score information on the Office of Undergraduate Admissions website. Please note that if English is your second language, an English proficiency score will be required.

Complete guidelines for international undergraduate applicants can be found on the Office of Undergraduate Admissions website.

“I knew it was a really good school and had high NCLEX rates. So, I started taking classes one at a time and geared them toward U-M prerequisites. This is my first real experience with a full load of classes, I love it."
