Borrowing Equipment

SoN IT maintains a few laptops which may be reserved and checked out for use on campus. Faculty can also check out equipment for use at home when necessary. Prior to physically removing any equipment from the School of Nursing, faculty must first complete and submit an equipment removal form to SoN IT. View the Request for Removal and Use of University Equipment form on the Property Control Office web page. Send all reservation requests to son-it@umich.edu

Purchasing New Equipment

With some variation depending on use, computers can be expected to last 4 years When new equipment is required, the School of Nursing IT staff must pre-approve any purchases of equipment that will require their support (e.g. computers, peripherals, network devices, PDAs). In considering a purchase, please note:
  • The recommended standard hardware and software configurations work well for most users. Occasionally IT staff recommend a non-standard configuration for special needs.
  • Buyer or buyer’s department will need to provide a shortcode in most cases.
  • Computers and equipment purchased with research funds will need to be approved by the Grants and Research Office (GRO).
  • When planning equipment purchases, allow adequate time for delivery, set-up, and installation. Most orders take about 2-4 weeks from initial contact to the point that a computer is delivered to the user; however, this time frame can be impacted by vendor availability and IT workload.
  • When in doubt, contact SoN IT by sending an email to son-it@umich.edu.
Purchases must be delivered to SoN IT at Attn: SoN IT, 400 North Ingalls, Room 423, Ann Arbor, MI 48109. Orders should also include the name of the faculty or staff member and their room number) that the equipment was ordered for, as well as the department, division, or research project for which they work.

Equipment Deployment

SoN IT deploys new and existing computers and equipment for Nursing faculty and staff as needed. Equipment must be setup to allow access to electrical outlets. Faculty and staff may provide SoN IT with surge protectors or UPS devices to extend the range of an outlet, but will be responsible for insuring that any extensions are safely used and do not obstruct pathways. All computers deployed by SoN IT will contain the School of Nursing's standard loadset (exceptions are made for research projects and faculty or staff that need special configurations).

Disposing of Equipment

All divisions, departments, and research offices should send obsolete and non-functional computers and equipment to property disposition. SoN IT transports equipment to property disposition the fourth Thursday of each month. Units who wish to have equipment delivered to property disposition should notify SoN IT at least one week in advance of this time. SoN IT will not store equipment prior to delivery, so equipment must remain in its original location until the delivery date.

Unsupported Hardware

  • Fax machines
  • Phones
  • Copiers
  • All-in-one printers (all brands)
  • Epson printers, Lexmark Z series printers
  • Obsolete computer hardware
Personally purchased computers and devices including speakers, scanners, and PDAs are not supported. If faculty are performing official University business at home or in the School of Nursing on a personal computer, we recommend that their department purchase or provide a computer for use. SoN IT will fully support any computer or device bought by the School and approved for use in the Nursing computing environment. On a temporary basis, faculty may check out a computer from the School for home use (see Equipment Reservations for details).
