Message from the Dean
Welcome to the University of Michigan School of Nursing.
This is an exciting time to be a part of our community, and we welcome you. The University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) offers a range of innovative and rigorous academic programs. Our faculty are multidisciplinary and hold doctoral degrees in nursing, public health, psychology, informatics, and related fields. With strong research preparation and national certification in their specialties, UMSN faculty are honored with numerous accolades including National Academy of Medicine membership and American Academy of Nursing fellowship.
UMSN students join faculty-led teams dedicated to making a global impact through cutting-edge research, education, clinical practice and professional service. They hail from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences – and diversity, equity and inclusion are at the core of our values. UMSN’s world-class faculty and students are why the school is consistently ranked highly by U.S. News and World Report and is also one of the leading schools in National Institutes of Health research funding.
Approximately 1,100 students are enrolled in our BSN and graduate programs. With recent growth in academic and research programs, UMSN is very pleased to have a new building with approximately 80,000 square feet of spaces to foster collaboration and community. The clinical learning center has state-of-the-art skill labs and simulated patient suites. The expansion provides space for our students to research, collaborate, and engage in learning at the edge of discovery.
The school has taken on many exciting initiatives over the past few years. One recent change is to transform clinical education and leadership with our new BSN to Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) pathway. It’s designed for nurses who desire the best in advanced practice and leadership education to advance health and health care. The program’s highly engaging, clinically focused approach helps nurses translate evidence into practice in clinical, primary-care, community, leadership, and policy settings. Our doctoral graduates are equipped and inspired to drive successful outcomes and, as a result, are highly sought after by the world’s best health systems.
For students seeking the best in research training, our PhD program offers rich mentorship of faculty from UMSN and across the university. UMSN graduates hold academic, research and leadership roles at esteemed institutions in the U.S. and around the world. Many students in our DNP and PhD programs are offered assistantships and other scholarships to support their study here at UMSN.
Being part of a premier public research university and maintaining a close affiliation with the University of Michigan Health System, a world-class academic health center, allows our faculty and students to be leaders on campus and to work, study, and collaborate with experts from a variety of health disciplines. Our graduates are truly the “leaders and best” – in that singular University of Michigan spirit.
