Message from Dean
Welcome to the University of Michigan School of Nursing.
This is an exciting time to be a part of the nursing community and especially the community here at U-M. Whether you are an eager new student, interested parent, valued alum, member of our distinguished faculty, or a friend of the school, I hope you find our website informative and valuable.
As a provider of world-class education, the School of Nursing offers innovative and rigorous academic programs taught by renowned faculty, giving our students the opportunity to become part of an institution dedicated to making a global impact through cutting edge research, education, clinical practice and professional service. Our students hail from a wide variety of backgrounds and previous experiences and all are valued here.
The University of Michigan School of Nursing is consistently ranked as one of the leading nursing schools in the country by U.S. News and World Report and is also one of the leading schools in National Institutes of Health research funding.
The School of Nursing currently enrolls approximately 1,000 students in our baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral programs and has strong faculty with research preparation, terminal degrees in nursing, and national certification in their specialties. With the growth in academic and research programs and increases in student enrollment, the School of Nursing is very pleased to have a new building with approximately 80,000 gross square feet of instructional spaces to foster collaboration and community. The clinical learning center has state of the art skill labs and simulated patient suites. The 2015 expansion has created the space needed for our students to continue to explore, research, engage and learn.
Being part of a premier, public research university and maintaining a close affiliation with the University of Michigan Health System (UMHS), a prominent medical facility, allows our faculty and students to be leaders on campus and to work, study, and collaborate with experts from a variety of disciplines. As of fall 2015, UMSN current and emeritus faculty includes three National Academy of Medicine members and 36 American Academy of Nursing fellows.
Over the past few years, the school has taken on many exciting initiatives. Our clinical relationship with UMHS enhances the groundbreaking research being conducted by our faculty and students every day and our portfolio of research activity and scholarship demonstrates the significant impact the school has on improving the health of our communities.
In addition to that, we’re also pioneering in the area of delivery methods for education through initiatives such as the implementation of a state-of-the-art simulation program that offers students educational experiences they are unlikely to find anywhere else. We launched a new and innovative Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree program, which is now also accepting applications from BSN to DNP students.
We strive to create a rich academic environment that is engaging for all of our community members, faculty and students alike, and a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion is at the core of all that we do. The School of Nursing is dedicated to graduating nursing professionals who are leaders and thinkers with cutting edge skills. The graduates of our programs and our faculty are truly the “leaders and best” and populate leadership positions locally, regionally, and around the world.
