Master's Program Student

Nimita Mehta - Master's Student, University of Michigan School of NursingNimita Mehta, a student in the master’s program pursuing an acute care nurse practitioner degree, came to the U.S. from India with a BS in chemistry and botany, and a passion for learning.

While Nimita was attending U-M in another degree program, a family member also living in Ann Arbor became ill, was admitted to UMHS, and was eventually diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder. Through this intense experience, Nimita witnessed the level of care the nurses provided for patients and their families, and became inspired to change her course of study to nursing. She was also impressed with the many career options a degree from the School of Nursing would present her. While working toward her BSN, the knowledge and dedication of U-M faculty further inspired Nimita to decide, “One day I want to teach nursing students.”

For her master’s degree, Nimita knew that acute care would be an ideal area of focus because she enjoys the challenging work, critical thinking, and technological applications that acute care patients require. She observes that at U-M, the faculty focus on instilling the theoretical knowledge that is essential to answering why.

“I always wanted to pursue my master’s. I appreciate the faculty members who put confidence in me – they knew I could do this.”

Nimita acknowledges that working full-time while pursuing her master’s is demanding. However, she wouldn’t change a thing. “These are the best years in regard to my personal growth. Every day I learn something – from faculty, colleagues, and patients that I come in contact with here.”
