World-Class Faculty Leaders in Education, Research, and Practice

Michigan is one of the highest rated universities in the world, and the School of Nursing, as well as the Nursing Business and Health Systems program, consistently ranks among the top five in the country. A key component of this success is our faculty who each contribute to  the overall mission of the program.  Many of these experienced practitioners and educators are engaged in research, are active in the scholarly community, are committed to continuing a clinical practice, and are leaders in their various areas of interest. From preparing and/or executing educational training throughout the state of Michigan and consulting with healthcare organizations to practicing bedside patient care, our faculty are deeply and actively involved in the field of nursing while also training the next generation.

Education Designed Around Individual Student Interests

Within the Nursing Business and Health Systems program, there is ample opportunity for students to take control of their educational path and tailor its specifics to their unique interests and goals. Whether students see themselves as managers, consultants, informatics specialists, educators, patient safety specialists, or business owners, the skills and training honed in the program provide an optimal foundation for various professional careers.

Innovative, Groundbreaking Research Specific to Nursing Business and Health Systems

Nursing Business and Health Systems faculty are conducting research on numerous topics including  teamwork, capacity to rescue, change management, information technology in clinical practice, research methodology and statistics, link of nursing processes to improved patient outcomes, and Second Life virtual unit. Students are encouraged to and supported in doing their own research. For instance, based on proposals developed in N536, many students have gone on to actually enact the research and write their findings.

Scope

The University of Michigan School of Nursing Nursing Business and Health Systems Program uses the AONE Nurse Executive Competencies as a basis for the curriculum and as a professional standard for evaluating core courses, selective courses and tracks.  The AONE Nurse Executive Competencies focus on five overlapping domains.  AONE believes that leaders at all levels must be competent in:
  • Communication and relationship-building
  • Knowledge of the healthcare environment
  • Leadership
  • Professionalism
  • Business skills
Nursing Business and Health Systems faculty mapped the nursing systems core courses and selective courses against the AONE competency set.  The educational tract was developed using an additional set of competencies, Council on Collegiate Education for Nursing, Nurse Educator Competencies, serving as another example of the ways in which the Nursing Business and Health Systems curriculum is shaped to be in alignment with relevant professional standards.
