B.S.N. Progression and Graduation Requirements

Progression Requirements

EACH UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MEETING THE FOLLOWING PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS:

    Students entering directly from high school and transfer students without transfer credit in English Composition must complete their English Composition requirement at the University of Michigan during their first year of enrollment. A minimum grade of “C” is required in English Composition.

    A student must meet all course prerequisites before registering in a course. Once the student is admitted to the nursing program, all science and clinical courses must be taken at the University of Michigan.

    A grade of “C“ or higher must be earned in all required nursing courses with the exception of the General Studies requirement (minimum 2 courses) and 6 credits of additional electives, for which a “C-“ is the minimal acceptable grade.

    Students are allowed to repeat only one clinical course and one science course and must achieve a “C” grade or better.

    Students must have a 2.0 cumulative grade-point average to progress from the sophomore to the junior year, and to progress from the junior year to the senior year.

    All courses listed in Levels I and II must be completed before enrolling in level three clinical courses.

    Social Sciences (minimum 6 credits) must be completed before beginning Level III.

    A minimum of 9 credits general studies (liberal arts) electives must be met before beginning Level III. This does not include the 3 credits of liberal arts electives required in Level IV.

    A 2.0 cumulative grade point average in professional courses and overall is required for graduation.

    All BSN coursework must be completed within seven years from the time of admission to the School of Nursing.

    Students must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 128 credit hours in the required program of study to qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Sixty-five of these hours must be in residence.

Additional Progression Policies for RN Students

    All course requirements from Levels I, II and III except Statistics* and 3 credits of electives must be satisfied before enrollment in senior courses.

*If CUGSN student, Statistics must be completed prior to taking N536, Utilization of Research.

Graduation Requirements

In order to qualify for the degree, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), the student must:

    Successfully complete the course requirements including professional, basic science, social science, and liberal arts courses. Elective course credits must include 6 credit hours, in addition to 6 credits of General Studies.

    Earn a cumulative honor point average of at least 2.0 and 2.0 honor point average in professional courses

    Earn at least 128 credits of which basic undergraduates must take 64 credit hours in residence, RN students 37 credit hours in residence plus credit by examination, and Second Career students 58 credit hours in residence.

    All undergraduate students must complete their BSN program within seven years from the time of admission.
