Philosophy of the Ph.D. Program
The philosophy of the School of Nursing is reflected in the Ph.D. program
in nursing. The doctoral program prepares nurses who contribute to developing
the empirical and theoretical base of nursing practice through research,
and assume leadership roles in education, professional nursing organizations,
health service systems, and other health-related enterprises. Education at
the doctoral level builds upon and extends content acquired at the baccalaureate
and masters levels and emphasizes theory development and research skills.
Students may be admitted post-baccalaureate or postmasters. It is possible
for those admitted post-baccalaureate to earn a masters degree in one of
the clinical program areas as part of their studies.
Doctoral study in nursing is designed to prepare scholars who are capable
of developing an empirical base for nursing practice in both current and
emerging healthcare systems. A unique strength of the Ph.D. program is the
opportunity to study the inter-relationships of physiological, psychological,
and socio-cultural variables, alone or in combination, as they influence
health outcomes. The program is predicated on professional preparation in
nursing and includes a strong clinical knowledge base that integrates scientific
theory with practice. |
