FAMILY NURSE PRACTITIONER

PROGRAM OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVES

The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) track prepares advanced practice nurses for the current and evolving primary health care system. The focus of the program is on community-based, cutting edge primary health care for individuals and families across the lifespan and addresses the needs of populations at risk. Issues of health promotion and positive health behaviors are emphasized. In addition, graduates are prepared to diagnose and treat common acute health problems such as infections and injuries, and diagnose, treat, and monitor chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Our program prepares students to provide direct patient care and participate in research, education, and policy activities relevant to advanced practice nursing and health care of diverse populations. Our graduates are employed in a variety of settings including: Community-based health centers, local health departments, emergency rooms, nurse-managed health centers and Indian Health Services to name a few. Post-Master's options are available for nurses with master's degrees in other nursing specialties.

Graduates are eligible to sit for ANCC and AANP certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

All degree requirements must be completed within six consecutive years from the first enrollment in graduate school.

FAMILY NURSE PRACTITIONER (Occupational Health Concentration)

PROGRAM OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVES

This option is an extension of the FNP program and prepares advance practice nurses for the current and evolving primary care health care system, with additional emphasis on occupational health. Issues of health promotion and positive health behaviors and a focus on health needs in the workplace are emphasized. This program option contains all content and clinical experiences required for certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner and as an Occupational Health Nurse, including over 500 hours of supervised practicum experience in primary care and occupational health services. The Occupational Health specialization includes 12 credit hours in interdisciplinary occupational health and public health courses, including epidemiology, occupational and environmental health, occupational diseases, ergonomics, and safety. Our graduates are prepared for employment in very diverse occupational settings including manufacturing, service industry, corporate environments, and agriculture.
