Master's and Post Master's Programs

FAMILY NURSE PRACTITIONER

PROGRAM OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVES

The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) track prepares advanced practice nurses for the current and evolving primary health care system. The focus of the program is on community-based, cutting edge primary health care for individuals and families across the lifespan and addresses the needs of populations at risk. Issues of health promotion and positive health behaviors are emphasized. In addition, graduates are prepared to diagnose and treat common acute health problems such as infections and injuries, and diagnose, treat, and monitor chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Our program prepares students to provide direct patient care and participate in research, education, and policy activities relevant to advanced practice nursing and health care of diverse populations. Our graduates are employed in a variety of settings including: Community-based health centers, local health departments, emergency rooms, nurse-managed health centers and Indian Health Services to name a few. Post-Master's options are available for nurses with master's degrees in other nursing specialties.

Graduates are eligible to sit for ANCC and AANP certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

All degree requirements must be completed within six consecutive years from the first enrollment in graduate school.
