OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH NURSING

PROGRAM OVERVIEW AND OBJECTIVES

The Occupational Health Nursing Clinical Specialist (OHNCS) master's degree is offered in conjunction with the University of Michigan Center for Occupational Health and Safety Engineering Education Research Center , which is funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Nursing students participate in courses and other interdisciplinary learning experiences with graduate students in Occupational Medicine, Industrial Hygiene, and Safety Engineering programs offered through the Center.

The curriculum is designed to prepare nurses to plan, implement, and evaluate programs and services provided in work settings. Required courses are taught by School of Nursing , School of Public Health , and College of Engineering faculty.

The 47-credit hour OHN track is offered only in the On Job/On Campus (OJOC) format. Students come to campus for one long weekend (Thursday through Sunday) approximately every 1-2 months for 2 years. This OJOC format with a unique combination of 50% face-to-face and 50% distance learning allows students to complete a master's degree without leaving their jobs.

Clinical experience is an integral part of the occupational health nursing component. Students participate in selecting field practice experiences in their home areas in a variety of industrial settings.
