Postdoctoral Fellowships in

Women's Health Disparities: Interdisciplinary Training

Goals

One to two year postdoctoral fellowships are funded by the NIH-supported institutional research training grant to prepare scientists to study the complex multifactorial causation of women's health disparities. The goals of the program are to enable nursing scholars to:

  • Gain expertise in the varied and sophisticated methods needed to develop complex multifactorial models of care;
  • Study health disparities among diverse populations of women and girls recognizing the intersectionality of gender, ethnicity and class; and
  • Collaborate with ethnically diverse communities to conduct research and foster the development of nurse scientists of color.

Training Support

Training support is for a l- to 2-year period. Annual stipends are set by NIH based upon years of experience since your doctorate.

Qualifications

PhD in nursing, or master's degree in nursing and PhD in health-related field, United States citizenship or permanent residency. Applicants should submit:

  • A letter describing specific research interest in women's health disparities, the fit of proposed research with the research area of potential mentors (one in nursing and one in a related discipline) at Michigan, and summary of career goals
  • Curriculum vita
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Transcripts of graduate study
  • Doctoral dissertation and reprints of publications

    Interviews will be arranged.

  • Carol Boyd - substance abuse, specifically cocaine use in women
  • Bernadine Cimprich - breast cancer, cognitive function, restorative environments, quality of life
  • Barbara Guthrie - substance abuse habits of adolescent girls from ethnically diverse groups
  • Shaké Ketefian - international health care, ethical issues
  • Carol Loveland-Cherry - family patterns and health behaviors; adolescent substance abuse
  • Sally Lusk - promotion of personal protective equipment use at worksite and in the community
  • Laurel Northouse - cancer effects on patient families, caregiving issues, quality of life
  • Penny F. Pierce - decision making in stressful health care contexts; interventions for women
  • Joanne Pohl - smoking cessation; nurse managed centers, quality, outcome, cost
  • Nancy Reame - stress on women's health; psychobiology of menopause, fertility and obesity
  • Carolyn Sampselle - health behavior and prevention of urinary incontinence in women
  • Margaret Scisney-Matlock - cognitive mapping and blood pressure control in African Americans
  • Antonia M. Villarruel - culturally appropriate health promotion risk reduction interventions with Latinos
  • Reg Arthur Williams - depression, stress and coping; interventions for depression
  • SeonAe Yeo - physical activity and its relation to health among women
  • Mei-Yu Yu - women's health community-based health promotion, intervention and cross-cultural nursing
