Accelerated Second Career Nursing Program

Admission Requirements

To be considered for the Second Career Program, applicants must have:
  • Bachelor's or a graduate/advanced degree from an accredited institution
  • 3.0 GPA minimum (highly recommended)
Applicants must also complete the following prerequisites prior to application or complete them by the start of the program if offered admission:
  • Prerequisites in general requirements and social sciences:
    • English Composition
    • Family Concepts*
    • Normal Nutrition*
    • Developmental Psychology*
    • Statistics
    • Electives
    • 2 social sciences, an introductory and an upper-level course or two upper-level courses (Courses must be taken in the following fields: anthropology, psychology, sociology)
  • Prerequisites in clinical sciences:
    • Anatomy & Physiology*
    • Organic-Biochemistry
    • Pharmacology*
    • Pathophysiology* (6 credits) (Without 6 credits of pathophysiology, students must have credits in microbiology and/or genetics in addition to pathophysiology for a cumulative total of at least 6 credit hours)
Please note that all clinical science courses must have been completed within the past 7 years to count for program credit.

If you are a non-University of Michigan - Ann Arbor applicant, you should choose the Common Application for Transfer Applicants and the University of Michigan Common Application Transfer Supplement to apply to the School of Nursing.

The Cross-Campus Transfer Application is for University of Michigan - Ann Arbor students and graduates.

Application  Required Supporting Material

1.  Nursing Supplemental Form
In addition to the online application, please thoroughly complete the supplemental form, available at this link: Second Career Supplemental Form and send it to: sn-secondcareersupplement@umich.edu 
 

Nursing Supplemental Form Important Notes

  • The subject line of the e-mail to which you attach the Supplemental Form MUST include your last name and the program of interest (e.g. Last Name, Second Career BSN)
  • Please send the Supplemental Form as a Microsoft Excel document.
  • Even if you are still in the process of completing prerequisite coursework, please be sure to include all of the required course information on the Supplemental Form.
  • Coursework that is not listed on our Course Equivalents & Self-Review Guide or the U-M Transfer Credit Equivalencies website has not been evaluated by the University of Michigan.
  • In order to complete an evaluation of your courses, we may request additional information at a later date. Please do not send any additional information at this time.  However, in order to be prepared for a possible request, please gather a complete syllabus plus a detailed course description of all courses not listed on our Course Equivalents & Self-Review Guide or the U-M Transfer Credit Equivalencies website.  Again, you should not send this information unless it is requested via e-mail.
  • Application review may be delayed for candidates who fail to submit a completed Supplemental Form.  As such, you should not leave spaces blank.

Standardized Test(s)

SAT 1 or ACT (including writing test/section)
Send test score directly to the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor using the following:
  • SAT code: 1839
  • ACT code: 2062

If you did not take the SAT or the ACT in high school, these scores are not a required element of your application.

International students must also submit scores from the TOEFL, IELTS, or MELAB. For details, see the Entrance Exams webpage.

Application Fee

  • $65 for U.S. applicants
  • $75 for International applicants

Current U-M students and U-M alumni do not pay this fee.
