Accelerated Second Career
Nursing Program
FAQs
The Program
Question: Do you offer a BSN-MSN track for Second Career Program students?
Answer: We very strongly encourage our all of our Second Career students to pursue one of over 20 master's specialties offered at the School of Nursing. As soon as a student is admitted to our Second Career Program, we offer support services to facilitate a smooth transition into a master's program. An academic advisor will work closely with admitted students to identify opportunities to earn graduate level academic credit while Second Career students are pursuing their BSN. Also, our admissions representative will offer assistance with the master's program application process and answer individual questions. Most importantly, our faculty offer one-on-one personal mentoring sessions to assist our Second Career students in exploring the specialty that will help students to best meet their personal and academic goals.

to begins.
Question: How recent do my prerequisites have to be?

We strongly recommend that all other prerequisite courses are completed within the last 7years.
Question: How do I know if a course will transfer into your
program?
Answer: We have most Michigan colleges and universities and their
transferring credits listed
on our website.
If your course is NOT listed, it has not been evaluated at the University of Michigan and may not transfer. You must pay your application fee for an official evaluation. The School of Nursing will not evaluate transcripts for prospective students prior to application.
If your course is not listed and you cannot take a course at an approved institution, your other option is to minimize the risk. You should review the course description for the School of Nursing course number on our website or the course description of an equivalent course from another, approved institution. Then, compare it to the course description of the course you plan to take. If ~95% of the content is the same, there is a strong possibility, but not a guarantee, that the course will transfer. You could also utilize the expertise of a professor at your current institution for assistance in reviewing the content.
Question: Which application do I use to apply to this program?
Answer: Go to the University of Michigan web site, www.umich.edu,
and click on Undergrad Application located in the lower right corner of the
site. You must complete the application on line.
Question: Does it cost anything to apply?
Answer: There
is no fee for former students of the University of Michigan. For all other
applicants, there will be a $40 processing fee.
Question: There are Application Tips
listed on the application. It states that the earlier you apply the greater
chance you have of getting in through a "modified rolling" admissions
system. Is that true for the 2nd Career Program?
Answer: Yes.
Question: What constitutes a completed application?
Answer: A completed application consists of:
Three requisite undergraduate essays
A completed Supplementary
Application
Official transcripts from all colleges attended since high
school
Resume
$40 processing fee (except for former UM students)
Question: What do you consider an official transcript?
Answer: An official transcript is a transcript sent from the college
or university it originated from still in its sealed envelope.
Question: What does the Admissions Committee look for in the
applicants to this program?
Answer: An undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher is recommended. The
more successfully completed prerequisites you have, especially in the sciences,
will give them a more complete picture of how you may do in this program. They
also look at the supplement form to see how you plan to complete the remaining
prerequisites. They look for leadership abilities, shadowing, volunteering,
or any work experience in the health care fields.
Question: I went to college many years ago and my GPA isn't
very high. Now I'm getting very good grades in the prerequisites. Will that
be taken into consideration?
Answer: Yes. The Admissions Committee will look at the total application,
not just merely the undergraduate GPA.
Question: What Plan of Study do I check on the application?
Answer: The Plan of Study will be transfer student.
Question:. What semester do I apply for?
Answer: The Second Career in Nursing Program only begins in the fall
semester so you would apply for the fall semester.
Question: What School or college am I applying to?

Question: What area of interest/program of study am I applying

on the application. Do I need to fill out that information?
Answer: No. We do not require any high school information or test
scores.

are asking about high school. How do I fill out these sections?
Answer: You may fill out these sections and note that it is a present
award or activity or you may leave these sections blank.
Question: How will I know if I've been accepted into the
program?
Answer: The Office of Undergraduate Admissions will communicate admissions decisions to applicants by mail.
This gives you time to plan Spring/Summer courses that you
still need to complete. The earlier you apply, the sooner you will receive a decision on your completed application.
Question: May I be placed on a wait list?
Answer: Applicants may be offered a place on the admissions wait list for
the current application cycle. Applicants placed on this list are not
ranked. If someone who has been offered admission declines their offer,
waitlisted applicants will be reviewed and those selected for an admission
offer will receive a letter from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. We
strongly encourage all waitlisted applicants to continue with any
prerequisite coursework needed and to send official transcripts documenting
successful completion of coursework to the Office of Undergraduate
Admissions. When the program begins in the fall, all applicants still on
the wait list will have to apply to the program again if they would like to
be considered for the following year. They will be evaluated along with the
new cohort of applicants. If you choose not to accept your offer of wait
list status, we appreciate if you would contact sn-osams@umich.edu,
as well as declining your offer in Wolverine Access.

You will fill out the term you completed each one, what the course name and
number was, the number of credits of each course, the school where you took
it, and the grade you received. If you haven't taken the prerequisite(s) when
you fill out this form, please indicate when and where you plan to take the
