Portrait of Dr. Dumas.

A Tribute to Dean Emerita Rhetaugh E. Graves Dumas, PhD, RN, FAAN 1928-2007

We are sad to announce that Dr. Rhetaugh Dumas, Dean of the UM School of Nursing from 1981-1994, passed away Sunday, July 22 after a long illness. We have lost a giant in our field who was an incredible leader of the school and the university. Her funeral was held on Saturday, July 28 in Natchez, MS.

The School of Nursing will sponsor several events to honor Dr. Dumas. We hosted a memorial display for her at the National Black Nurses Association Conference in July. We will honor her memory at a Celebration of Life on September 21, 2007 at 3:30 p.m in Rackham Auditorium. Please see the Memorial Service page for more details. We will also host a memorial reception at the Academy in November. We will keep you informed of specific details of these events as they emerge. Our School of Nursing Development Office is managing the communications. If you have questions please direct them to Mr. Edward Maki-Schramm at 734-615-6692.

A photo, biography, and guest book display are in front of the Dean's office for guests to pay their respects. Her biography and and guestbook are also available online. All guest books will be compiled and sent to the family of Dr. Dumas.
