Teaching
Ms. Thomas’s role as a teacher is to promote an environment that enables the student to become more self-aware, confident and comfortable with psychiatric nursing competencies and knowledge and to continue to develop critical thinking processes. She wants the student to think of the nursing process as it applies to a group of patients. She expects and assists her students with implementing a number of planned, therapeutic groups during their clinical experiences. To increase the students’ knowledge and appreciation of the history, beliefs, values, customs and contributions of non-Caucasian individuals and groups, Ms. Thomas assigns trips to the following museums: the Arab American Museum; the Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History; and the Holocaust Museum-Holocaust Memorial Center.
