Dr. Katie Moriarty has a diverse background having worked in all birth settings as a Certified Nurse Midwife prior to coming to the University of Michigan (hospital, in-hospital birthing center, freestanding birth center, and homebirth). She specializes in the healthcare of women during the reproductive years with an emphasis on holistic care, guidance in health and wellness promotion, risk reduction, with complementary therapies and integrative healthcare options. 

Katie is the first midwife to be certified by the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute (CAFCI). She has incorporated this care into her clinical practice since 2003. Dr. Moriarty has conducted workshops and presented her work and research nationally and internationally. She practices with the U-M School of Nursing Nurse Managed Center where she developed the first midwifery clinic incorporating integrative healthcare and complementary therapies for pregnant women and women’s reproductive health in the United States. 

Teaching

Dr. Katie Moriarty has developed an elective course, Integrative Healthcare, Complementary Therapies and Alternative Healing (N516 and cross-listed in the Public Health Dept HBEHED 517) to introduce students to the principles, practices, use and outcomes within this field. Students learn to use evidence-based criteria to evaluate the benefits and risks of selected complementary therapies. Ethical, legal and professional issues are also explored. Dr. Moriarty also conducts a Mind Body Skills Lab whereby students have the opportunity to learn, practice and discuss a variety of mind-body techniques which can be used to alleviate stress and enhance health and well-being.

Dr. Moriarty teaches the following courses in the graduate department: Advanced Physical Assessment for APN (N503); Antepartum Care of Essentially Normal Women (N546); Nursing Care of Childbearing Families (N640); Intrapartum, Postpartum and Newborn Care (N676); Professional Issues for Nurse Midwives (N678);  Integrative Healthcare, Complementary Therapies, Alternative Healing (N516, cross-listed HBEHED 517)
 
She brings years of education and extensive clinical experience to her clinical practice and teaching and understands the significance of blending the art with the science of best evidence healthcare practices.
