Scholarly Expertise / Activity

Interests:

  • Access to person-centered health care
  • Adolescent sexual risk assessment and provider communication
  • Event History Calendars
  • Qualitative research
Dr. Kristy Martyn is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) who has more than 20 years of experience in primary health care and in research with adolescents from diverse populations. Her program of research focuses on increasing access to person-centered health care for child, adolescent and young adult populations. During the past 10 years, Dr. Martyn has conducted extensive preliminary work to develop an event history calendar (EHC) for person-centered adolescent and young adult risk behavior assessment and communication with nurse practitioners and physicians in primary health care settings. More recently, Dr. Martyn has collaborated on studies focused on PNP career choice and education programs.

Dr. Martyn’s current research study (1st bullet below) is a randomized controlled trial designed to evaluate the effect of EHC clinical assessment on sexually active adolescents’ cognitive appraisal of risk, sexual risk behavior and intentions, and quality of communication with nurse practitioners and physicians. The EHC is a time-linked integrated risk history tool that has the potential for improving adolescent risk history recall and report, adolescent risk perception, and patient-provider communication, and ultimately reducing adolescent and young adult risk behaviors via person-centered primary health care.
