Ms. Laura Dansel's primary research interest is societal attitudes related to mental health care for children and how those attitudes influence children's access to mental health care. She also studies the effectiveness of preventive early childhood mental health interventions and their effectiveness on children's later social competence. Building on these focuses, one of her current research projects includes looking at defining the role of Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners and issues related to stigma.
Teaching
Ms. Dansel has precepted students in clinical areas in both the undergraduate and graduate curriculums, guest lectured in graduate psychiatric nurse practitioner courses, and served as lecturer and course coordinator in the second career nursing program. Some of her larger goals in working with students are to help them embrace the current emphasis on biological psychiatry while not losing the importance of psychosocial interventions, as well as instilling the importance of being knowledgeable regarding the mental health care of their patients and reducing stigma. The qualities she most values in her students as future nurses are assertiveness, working as equals with other professionals, integrity, compassion, kindness and maintaining a nonjudgmental attitude in the care of patients.
