Bio
Carol J. Boyd, PhD, MSN, FAAN is the Director of the Institute for
Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) at the University of Michigan, the
Deborah J Oakley Collegiate Professor of Nursing, Professor of Women’s
Studies and a Research Professor at the Substance Abuse Research Center.
Dr. Boyd is an internationally recognized scholar in the studies of
substance abuse and vulnerable populations. Her earlier research focused
on women’s abuse of heroin and crack cocaine, but her more recent NIH
funded studies focus on adolescent and young adult populations.
Dr. Boyd has been a principal investigator on the UM /Student Life
Survey, a random sample, web-based survey of UM students focusing on
drug, alcohol and other risky behaviors. The Student Life Survey,
funded by UM and the NIH began in 1999 and provides data to the
University of Michigan community.
Dr. Boyd publishes extensively in medical, nursing and interdisciplinary
journals; her most recent work centers on prescription drug abuse in
school-based populations and has been published in Journal of
Adolescent Health, Pediatrics, and in Archives of Adolescent and Pediatric Medicine.
