Research

Dr. Larson is an expert in the pulmonary rehabilitation of people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).   She maintains an active program of research, studying factors that influence symptoms, functional status and quality of life for people with COPD.   Specifically she is interested in the function of inspiratory muscles and has conducted a series of studies to examine the effects of inspiratory muscle training and cycle ergometry training on strength and endurance of the respiratory muscles (NIH NR01428).   She conducted a prospective longitudinal study to examine factors that influence deterioration of respiratory muscle strength and functional status in people with COPD (NIH NR04129).   She is currently conducting a randomized controlled trial of upper body strength training in people with COPD (NIH NR 08037) and conducting preliminary studies to examine daily physical activity in people with COPD.

Teaching

Dr. Larson mentors students in her research laboratory.   She teaches research seminars for graduate students and lectures on topics of respiratory physiology and pathophysiology at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Service

Dr. Larson is a nationally recognized leader in respiratory nursing.   She was the co-founder and first president of the Respiratory Nursing Society.   She is active in the Midwest Nursing Research Society, currently serving as treasurer and member of the Board of Directors.   She is active in the American Thoracic Society, Assemblies on Nursing and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, currently serving as chair of the Assembly on Nursing and member of the ATS Board of Directors.   Dr. Larson currently chairs the Nursing Science: Adults and Older Adults Study Section, Center for Scientific Review.
