Dr. Reg Williams, professor of nursing and psychiatry and a recently retired Naval reservist, has a triple appointment with the University of Michigan at the School of Nursing, the Depression Center, and UMHS. His life’s work has been spent in the research of Intervention with Navy Recruits at risk for depression, Self-Symptom Management of Patients with Recurrent Depression, and Directed Attention and Short Term Memory in Depression.

Dr. Williams designed an online program, Stress Gym, with Dr. Bonnie Hagerty, Associate Professor, U of M School of Nursing, to help Navy recruits cope with the emotional challenges of training that improved recruits' functioning, strengthened their training performance and reduced attrition. He is widely published and has presented papers locally, nationally and internationally.

“Our internet intervention program, Stress Gym, was tested with Navy members to help them with the stress of active duty. The outcome was a positive evaluation of the intervention by Navy officers and enlisted personnel. We are adapting the intervention for combat casualty patients in the Navy/Marines, Army, and Air Force and will be tested with the patients and nurses in military treatment facilities next year.”
