So you want to make a web page. The first thing you need to decide is what you will use your web site for. Do you want to post syllabi, course assignments, and lecture notes for your students? Do you want your fellow researchers to be able to keep up with the work you're doing - or you want a simple site with just your name, contact information, and picture? Take some time to think about what you'd like to put on your web site. You may want to take a look at our Quick Pick chart.

Tools Available to Help You Create a Web Site

UM SiteMaker

UM SiteMaker is a program designed to help U-M faculty and staff make academic web pages. You fill out a series of web forms to create a site. UM SiteMaker is ideal for making an academic web site highlighting your education, research, and teaching experience. (See Using UM SiteMaker for more details.)

WorkTools

The School of Information's WorkTools is a web application designed to help researchers involved in a collaborative project. It is an excellent way to organize your data, schedule meetings, and use interactive chat. (See Using WorkTools for additional information.) You can even work with researchers at other institutions. If you want to make a course web site that your students can view, however, WorkTools is not the best choice for you.

Coursetools

The Media Union's Coursetools helps you put syllabi, articles, exam schedules, study topics and much more on a web site that your students can easily access. In addition, your students can submit papers and assignments online and participate in an online discussion with you and other members of the class. (See Using Coursetools for more information.) A Coursetools web site, however, is a web site for a particular course that you're teaching rather than a web site highlighting your educational background, research interests, and experience.

HTML

Learning to write HTML code is slightly difficult but rewarding. The easiest way is just to study the different aspects of the language like you would study basic French grammar or the instructions for a computer program. The following links should be useful:

Dreamweaver

Macromedia Dreamweaver is the premier HTML editor available to U-M faculty and staff. You should be able to use Dreamweaver from any Campus Computing Site. Dreamweaver offers all the flexibility of HTML but is easy enough for a web novice to use! Dreamweaver offers a what-you-see-is-what-you-get interface as well as an HTML code interface. The program gives you complete control over the design of your web page. We have created a step-by-step guide to making a simple web page in Dreamweaver.

Are you still unsure which tool is best for you? Why not compare them?
