UM SiteMaker allows you to make a web site without using any HTML or web editor (such as Dreamweaver or FrontPage). All you have to do is request a site on SiteMaker then, a few days later, use online forms to create your site.

Creating a New Web Site

Visit the UM SiteMaker web page at http://sitemaker.umich.edu and click the Request a New Site button. You will then be asked to log in with your uniqname and password. After you've logged in a form will ask you to choose your Organizational Unit ("Nursing, School of" is near the bottom of the list) and a site ID. Your site ID will determine what the URL of your site would be. For example, if your name is Ann Nurse you may want to choose "annnurse" so that your URL would be
http://sitemaker.umich.edu/annnurse. After you've chosen a site ID, click the Request New Site button. It may take a few days for your new site to be created. You will get an e-mail from SiteMaker when your site is ready to be customized.

Building Your Web Site in UM SiteMaker

After you've received e-mail notification that your site is ready to be modified, log in to UM SiteMaker and click the Configure an Existing Site button. You will be taken to the "Main Configuration Page", where you can begin to make changes to your site.

You should edit the "Home" section of your web site first. SiteMaker will ask you to pick between a Text and/or image page and a List of links/files page. You should select Text and/or image, which is the default option. Now you will be taken to a form where you may type in content for the page. Keep in mind that the "Home" page that users will see when they type in your URL. You can put text, images, links to other web sites, and links to other parts of your web site on this page. You might want to start by typing a short introduction to users and a bit about the research you're doing and the courses you're teaching. If you want to put images on your "Home" page you have to upload them first! (see below)

Uploading Files in UM SiteMaker

At this point you might want to upload files - image files, PowerPoint presentations, Excel spreadsheets, etc. Click the Upload Files button from the "Main Configuration" page. A menu will appear allowing you to select the name of a file from your computer. Use the Browse button to find the file on your hard drive. When you've selected your flile click the Upload button.

A screen will appear asking you to set file properties. You probably won't need to change any of the settings here unless the file you just uploaded was an especially sensitive data set or something else you don't want everyone to be able to access. If this happens to be the case, use the menu to change file access from Everyone to Access Groups Only - otherwise just click Set Properties to Complete Upload. You should upload all of your files now - don't worry about where to put them yet, that comes later.

Changing the Appearance of Your Web Site

Click the Configure Overall Appearance button on the "Main Configuration" page. You will be taken to a screen that offers you several options:

Banner text (This is the text that will appear in big letters at the top of the page - Ann A. Nurse, Ph.D., R.N., for example.)

Show banner for... (If you don't want banner text, you can select No. Otherwise leave this option set to Yes.)

Show navigation bar (The Navigation Bar contains links to the other sections in your web site. Unless you want some parts of your site to be private leave this option set to Yes.)

Footer (The Footer option allows you to add links - School of Nursing, for example, and University of Michigan. You may type in as many as four URLs.)

Show footer (If you want to have a footer select Yes, if not select No.

Site Style (This is probably the most important option! You can choose a style, i.e. color scheme, from the pop-up menu to the right. Experiment! You can always change it later.)

Publish Site (Set this option to Yes in order to make your site publicly viewable. If you still want to tweak a little you could leave it set to No.)

Adding a New Section to your UM SiteMaker Site

If you want to make a new section for your web site, say, a resume or a paper you've published, click the Add a New Section button in the "Main Configuration Page" of SiteMaker.

Just like with your "Home" page you can type in text or arrange pictures that you have already uploaded.

Using Access Priveleges

Let's say you want to make part of your web site available to your students only. You can create an access group in SiteMaker so that only those whom you select can view certain sections of your site. How does this work? After you've added members to your access group they will have to log in to your site using their Kerberos password (UM users) or a password that the system assigns to them (non-UM users). Sound complicated? It's not.

To create an access group, click the Configure Access Groups button on your "Main Configuration Page". Click the Add a New Access Group button and type a name for your group (say "nursing-140") into the space provided. Now you can add members to your group one at a time by typing either the member's uniqname (UM users) or full e-mail address (non-UM users) into the "Add a Member" space below the name of the group you just created. After you've added the first member, click the Save Changes button. Now enter the second member's uniqname or e-mail address and click Save Changes again. Continue to add uniqnames or e-mail addresses until you've given access to everyone who needs it! Click Save and Finish to exit.

Sending Files to Colleagues and Students

One of the most exciting features of SiteMaker is the ability to "invite" students and colleages to download files from your web site with just one mouse click! It's simple to do and a very efficient way to get your data out. Click the Upload/Manage Files button on the "Main Configuration Page". You'll see a list of all your files. Look for the file you want to "send" and click the small envelope icon next to the file. A "Send Message to Pickup File" screen will load asking you to type in the e-mail addresses of those to whom you wish to send the file. Type in the addresses and click the Send e-mail button to finish.
