Science in the Press: Care and Discovery
The GRO initiative focuses on promoting visibility of the discoveries
of University of Michigan School of Nursing (UMSN) scientists
in the media to enhance public awareness of nursing science and
its contribution to national and international health. UMSN scientists
are researching areas that are of high interest to the public
and thus, of high interest to reporters. Cooperation with the
press serves as an educational outreach tool to the public. Positive
media attention increases public understanding of the importance
of investing monies in health research. The University, the School
of Nursing and the nursing profession benefit from positive press.
The UMSN joins the National Institute of Nursing Research in its
national effort to increase news coverage for nursing research.
The UMSN in collaboration with the University of Michigan News
and Information Services (UMNIS) holds media training seminars.
The seminars are full of useful tips that help faculty understand
how reporters thinks, questions they are likely to ask, and the
types of stories they are looking for. Interviews with reporters
can be a taxing experience so the UMSN and UMNIS hold videotaped,
mock interviews to assist faculty in self-evaluation and group
critique of their public media presentations of science.
The UMSN-GRO collaborates with Research!America, an organization
committed to building public advocacy for funding health research
in the United States. UMSN scientists have participation in Research!America
Scientist-Media Round Tables to increase communication and understanding
between scientists and reporters from the print and broadcast
media.
Forms are available for alerting UMNIS to the results of your
research. You can link to a News Release Request that is easy
to complete and alert Colleen Newvine to an article "in press."
It is important to remember that an article, once it is published,
is no longer news. Thus, it is extremely important to contact
Colleen Newvine as soon as your manuscript is accepted for publication
to discuss its potential news value. She will then have time to
review the abstract and manuscript, interview you and prepare
a news release so that coverage is ready to go as soon as the
article is released.
