Clinical Learning Center
The Clinical Learning Center environment allows students the opportunity to practice nursing, psychomotor and assessment skills, and to participate in simulations using a high fidelity mannequin. Our labs include state of the art equipment and we provide a wide variety of mannequins and simulators to facilitate skills acquisition and teaching patient care.
The Center includes a lab for nursing skills practice , a Simulation room and seven examination rooms.
Nursing Skills Lab Room 1222
Our Nursing Skills lab, room 1222, has 11 bedside care areas that include ten Hil-Rom Beds and one Hill Rom Total Care ICU bed. A Liko patient lift provides the opportunity to demonstrate and practice safe patient maneuvers and body mechanics. Our patient mannequins and simulators allow students to practice many skills before client contact. Alaris IV infusion pumps, Abbott PCA pumps and cardiac rhythm simulators also enable students to gain valuable experience and increase their knowledge of medical technology. A computer is available to provide website access to additional resources.
Physical Assessment lab exam rooms (1249A,B,C,D,E,F,G)
Seven physical exam rooms include Midmark exam tables, Welch Allyn diagnostic instruments, examination lamps, ethernet connections and hand washing sinks. Supplies used to conduct physical examinations are included in all rooms.
Rooms F and G can have moveable panels that can convert the rooms into one small demonstration area. Room F has a whiteboard.
A variety of simulators, models, charts and diagnostic tools are available as teaching aides
Simulation and Debriefing room (Room 1249, 1249I)
The simulation room is designed as an ICU that includes a headwall unit to provide simulated oxygen and suctioning, Welch Allyn diagnostic tools and sink/counter space. Our Sim Man mannequin (distributed by Laerdal Corp) is utilized in this area and provides enhanced simulations and further helps students to develop assessment, critical thinking and clinical judgment skills.
Sim Man is a high-fidelity mannequin that has lung, bowel and heart sounds, palpable bilateral femoral pulses, brachial, radial and carotid pulses, a blood pressure training arm, and IV training arm. Audio (.wav) files are included to allow verbal communication in a simulation, or the user can record their own communication (.wav file). Students can practice numerous skills on Sim Man, including wound/urinary catheterization care, injections, tracheotomy care, and chest tube insertion. He can be shocked and used for CPR.
Scenarios, or simulations (sims) are written and the data is entered into the program. The simulation can run automatically or “on the fly”.
The Simulation room is also equipped with three recording cameras and microphones. As students are participating in scenarios, the action can be recorded using the web-based software through EMS.
Located next to the Simulation room is the Control room (1249J), which has one-way glass to allow faculty to view students working in the Sim room. Our laptops that manage Sim Man software, the debriefing system and cameras are stored here.
Debriefing Room, Room 1249
The Debriefing Room is equipped with a dvd/vhs combo unit, lcd projector, laptop,
Whiteboard and powered screen. Here students can watch live scenarios in the Sim room through the use of EMS software.
