CSC Renovations

Office of Academic Affairs

Nursing Clinical Simulation Center

Under the direction of Dean Ada Sue Hinshaw, Carol Loveland-Cherry, Executive Associate Dean for the Office of Academic Affairs and Ms. Patty Laird, Director of the Office of Business and Financial Affairs, the School of Nursing endeavored to begin planning for a renovation of our nursing skills laboratory.

Planning began in fall, 2003, and funding was approved by the Provost's office in spring, 2004. A Renovation committee began meeting in May, 2004. Meetings continued through fall and winter, 2005. While the scope of the project was to enhance our skills lab area, the project also included renovating the corridor, upgrades to two classrooms, student lounge and reading room. In January, 2005, a collaborative effort between the School of Nursing and Educational Services for Nursing was formed. Through the efforts of Marge Calarco, Senior Associate Director of Patient Care and Nursing Services, and Larry Warren, Director and Chief Executive Officer of University of Michigan Hospital and Health Centers, further funding from the University of Michigan Health System was provided to benefit both the School of Nursing and Educational Services for Nursing. Under this collaboration, the School of Nursing and Educational Services for Nursing share resources including lab space for ESN Central Nurse Orientations.

Our newly renovated north wing includes:

Nursing Skills laboratory, Room 1222

Eleven patient care areas, one computer station, two hand washing sinks and Ethernet connections. One patient care area has a Liko patient lift and medical/surgical headwall unit.

Physical Assessment lab, room 1249

Seven physical exam rooms that include ethernet connections, Welch Allyn diagnostic instruments and handwashing sink, two demonstration areas, and restroom.

Both demonstration areas include a whiteboard and ethernet connection; the large area also includes video equipment, mounted lcd projector and computer.

ICU, Room 1249I

ICU headwall unit with suctioning and simulated medical air capabilities, Laerdal Sim Man Manikin and accessories, handwashing sink and ethernet connection.

Control Room with one-way glass, 1249J

Future plans include adding debriefing equipment that will be used to reinforce learning through Sim Man simulation scenarios, and two way communications.
