A World Health Organization (WHO/PAHO) Collaborating Center for Research and Clinical Training in Health Promotion Nursing
The Role of WHO
The objective of the World Health Organization is “the attainment by all peoples of the highest possible level of health.” WHO also promotes and conducts research in the field of health. It has been recognized that the optimal way to perform this function is through collaboration with institutions within member states.
What is a WHO Collaborating Center?
A collaborating center (CC) is part of an inter-institutional collaborative network set up by WHO in support of its mission, particularly in respect of its aim of health for all, at country, regional, and global levels.
The University of Michigan School of Nursing Collaborating Center
In August 1997 the Director-General of WHO designated the University of Michigan School of Nursing as a WHO CC for Research and Clinical Training in Health Promotion Nursing. This designation recognized the high quality of scientific and technical leadership of the School’s programs at the national and international levels, as well as that of its facilities and resources. It has been re-designated several times since 1997.
Current Activities of the Center
The areas for development include nursing education, practice, research and leadership development. Activities include:
- Developing research and educational partnerships;
- Faculty and student exchanges;
- Compiling and disseminating information and research findings relevant to Center goals;
- Conducting workshops internationally;
- Engaging in training and leadership development;
- Collaborating with WHO and the Pan American Health Organization (regional office), other organizations, and institutions to promote Health for All, and the health goals of the Millennium Development Goals.
- Conducting an international scholars program.
