International Scholars Program
Procedures and Guidelines for International Scholars
All requests from international visitors and scholars are directed to the School of Nursing Office of
International Affairs, University of Michigan. In applying for scholarly experiences or short-term visits, the
following information is needed to conduct and complete a review of applications:
- Curriculum vitae
- Objectives of the visit
- Evidence of competent use of the English language
- Period of proposed visit
- Evidence that funds are available for the study period
- A paper prepared by the applicant describing preliminary work done in the area of research that will be the focus of the study period
- A description of the type of experiences being sought
In all instances admission of the scholar is dependent on availability of a faculty mentor whose work is a
good match for the scholar’s research.
Prospective scholars may be asked to submit other relevant information to assist in a full evaluation
of the request; examples of these are: evidence that degree requirements in home country have been completed;
examples of scientific papers published or presented at professional meetings, among others.
Approximately six months must be allowed as lead time to allow for review and appropriate planning.
World Health Organization Fellows apply to their Regional Offices; requests to the School of Nursing to
accommodate these fellows comes from the Regional Office for the Americas (PAHO); the Office of International Affairs communicates with the Fellowships office at PAHO to assure that all relevant information has been submitted to enable a review of the request.
