International Internships for Graduate Students
University of Michigan, School of Nursing
Office of International Affairs
The Office of International Affairs, School of Nursing, will support a limited number of individually designed internship experiences for graduate students either in research or other relevant professional endeavors to be conducted in countries outside the United States. The purpose is to expand the international competence of domestic and international students and to help expand networks. These internships may be with health care agencies, governmental agencies/departments, non-governmental organizations or institutions of higher learning. They may be for credit or for professional enrichment. The program is intended to provide opportunities for the development of professional practice in settings other than the United States. The focus of the internship may be research, nursing practice, policy development or other areas relevant to the student’s career.
Awards may range from $500 to $1500 and are subject to funding availability. The student submits a report or an article prepared for submission at the end of the internship period.
Eligibility. All graduate students in the School of Nursing are eligible to apply. Applicants must indicate proficiency in the language needed for the internship, or demonstrate why proficiency in the language of the country may not be necessary for the conduct of the experience. This award is not intended for language learning or travel to meetings; funds may not be used for return to the student’s home country. Students are encouraged to apply for countries where faculty have linkages. An information meeting should be sought with the director of international affairs prior to submission of application. Note that during the time the internship is undertaken, the recipient of funds must have the status of student.
Application. The student submits a proposal explaining international interests, discussing career goals, objectives for the experience, and how the proposed internship will further career goals. Student should also address the type of preparatory work that will be undertaken prior to departure. The application should include a detailed budget, the costs associated directly with the internship, the project timetable, CV, faculty letter of support, and whether the experience is for credit. Submit information to the Office of International Affairs, School of Nursing, Room 3214, Tel.: 763-6669, Fax: 615-3798. Prior to departure, students should comply with both U-M and School of Nursing policies pertaining to international travel.
Deadline. Applications should be submitted 6 months prior to the start of the proposed experience. An important consideration is to allow sufficient time for the student to engage in appropriate preparation for the internship, such as by taking courses on the region of interest, or preparation of research proposals if student intends to carry out research. Additional information will be requested of students closer to the date of departure. [OIA website: www.nursing.umich.edu/oia]
