Study Abroad Opportunities for Undergraduate Students

University of Michigan, School of Nursing
Office of International Affairs

There are a number of opportunities for undergraduate students to study abroad and expand their cultural understanding while developing their leadership skills in international environments. Many of these experiences carry credit that students can use as part of their program, with appropriate advisement, and they tend to be during summer months. Students need to investigate options early in the year and plan accordingly. Several examples are provided below.

Global Intercultural Experience for Undergraduates [GIEU]. Funded by the Provost’s office to provide intercultural exposure to students. These are seminars and trips led by University of Michigan faculty. [www.gieu.umich.edu]

Nursing in London, 5 credits. Offered by Michigan State University. With arrangements made by the U-M, our students may enroll in this course. [www.studyabroad.msu.edu/programs/uknurse]

The International Institute provides support to undergraduate students for internships, research, and study overseas. See their website for details on items listed below: [www.ii.umich.edu]

Department of State U.S. Student Fulbright Program
The Institute of International Education (IIE), on behalf of the U.S. State Department, administers the Student Fulbright Program, which makes fellowships available to over 1,500 U.S. students annually to study, conduct research, teach English or train in the creative arts in more than 140 countries worldwide. At U-M this competition is administered by the International Institute.

International Institute Individual Fellowships
The International Institute Individual Fellowships are designed to support University of Michigan students, regardless of citizenship, who are enrolled in a degree program and wish to participate in internships or conduct research abroad. Award amounts are up to $5,000.

Luce Scholars Program
The Luce Scholars Program provides stipends and internships for 18 young Americans to live and work in Asia each year. Dating from 1974, the program's purpose is to increase awareness of Asia among future leaders in American society. Luce Scholars have backgrounds in virtually every field (other than Asian studies) including medicine, the arts, business, law, science, environmental studies, and journalism.

Other opportunities. The School of Nursing is now developing a plan whereby students may meet the clinical component of some courses in other countries. These are typically for upper division students, and are announced to relevant student groups during the year. Note: the OIA website is: www.nursing.umich.edu/oia.
