What
is GENESIS?
The GENESIS Project stands for Gaining Excellence
in Nursing Education: Students Intensifying
Scholarship. The purpose of the project is to increase
the number of economically or educationally disadvantaged students,
including underrepresented ethnic and racial populations, graduating
with a BSN degree from The University of Michigan School of Nursing.
The GENESIS Project is
designed to target:
· Students currently enrolled at the UM School of Nursing
· Registered Nurses interested in obtaining their BSN
· Community College Transfer Students
· High School and Middle School students interested in
careers in health care.
The GENESIS Project offers
a variety of mechanisms to achieve our goals:
Peer Facilitated Study Groups
Stipends for student enrolled in the GENSIS Project
Clinical Support Groups
Tutoring & Mentoring
Counseling & Referrals
Research Opportunities
· Job Shadowing
Currently
Enrolled and RN Transfer Students at UM SON
The GENESIS Project will increase the number of students from
disadvantaged groups transferring into the University of Michigan
School of Nursing BSN program. To facilitate their retention and
successful graduation, the program will provide:
· Academic support through Peer Facilitated Study Groups
Study groups are comprised of a small group of students who work
together to master difficult concepts, understand course content,
and suggest appropriate learning strategies.

Community
College Transfer Students
The transition from a community college program to a BSN program
can be challenging. Community college students enrolled in a transfer
program to the University of Michigan School of Nursing are eligible
for participation in the GENESIS Project. Currently, the GENESIS
Project is targeting transfer students at Washtenaw Community
College, Wayne County Community College, and Jackson Community
College. By joining the GENESIS Project, students will be eligible
for:
· Mentoring and Support
GENESIS project staff are available to students for mentoring
and support. In addition, students will meet with their advisor
3 times during their program, and with the GENESIS Project Director
prior to enrollment at the U of M. This will help ensure a seamless
transition for the student.
· Community College Peer Facilitated Study Groups
The successful
Peer Facilitated Study Group model developed at the U of M will
be duplicated at the community college level. Students enrolled
in the GENESIS project sign up at their campus for participation
in study groups. To enroll in study groups at your community college
or to get more information, please contact contact the GENESIS

BEST (Boot Camp for Entering Students Training) for Newly Admitted Freshman
& Transfer Students to the UM School of Nursing
BEST-Boot Camp for Entering Students Training in conjunction with the
Comprehensive Studies BRIDGE Program
(www.lsa.umich.edu/csp/programs/bridge) prepares underrepresented high
school seniors and new transfer students, accepted into the School of
Nursing, to be successful while attending the University of Michigan.
During the two week residential program, the students are prepped for the
upcoming semesters. Activities will include college preparatory projects,
e.g., writing, study skills, college life orientation; modules for learning
styles; visits to the UMSON to learn about the nursing curriculum, research
and career opportunities; orientation to U of M facilities and
technologies; and subject skills, e.g. math calculations for drug
dispensation. This tuition-free program extends from June 15 - June 27,
2008.
High
School -- The EnAct Program
EnAct stands for Exploring Nursing As a Career for Tomorrow.
High school and middle school students will be exposed to nursing
and other health care professions. Students will be provided
guidance and mentoring while preparing for post-secondary education
in health care professions. Disadvantaged and underrepresented
high school and middle school students enrolled in the GENESIS
Project are eligible for:
· Summer Research Experience
The goal of EnAct is to offer a holistic
view of nursing to economically and educationally disadvantaged
students who are interested in pursuing nursing as a career. This
includes students from racial and ethnic populations who are considered
underrepresented in this field. High school students are eligible for a
tuition-free two week summer program where they would have the
opportunities to visit nursing classes and work with nurse researchers.
Students will also be provided with information on admission
requirements and other relevant college preparatory subjects. The
program will take place from June 15th through June 27th, 2008. Summer
