Project History

The Peer Facilitated Study Group and Clinical Support Project (PFSGCSP) was initiated in 1996. The project was designed to improve retntion, progression and graduation rates of undergraduate students within the University of Michigan School of Nursing. Although students from underrepresented groups are targeted, all nursing students are eligible and invited to participate in study groups.

In July 2002, the Office of Multicultural Affairs secured funding through HRSA for the Gaining Excellence in Nursing Education: Students Intensifying Scholastics (GENESIS) Project. This funding will enable our office to continue and expand the Peer Facilitated Study Group and Clincial Support Projects.

Since the program's initiation, the PFSGP had facilitated over thirty-six courses. Surveys of the PFSGCSP have demonstrated that most participants have been very satisfied with their participation in the program. Participants have reported that the groups have helped them to successfully navigate their courses better understand strategies for academic success.

The Study Group presents an opportunity for participants to sharpen their skills in identifying key concepts and provides experiences in applying nursing concepts and related science course content into nursing practice. The Study Group focuses on both content (from course materials) and the process of learning and thinking.

The Peer Facilitated Study Groups represents a volunteer, informed, self-selected Participant non-credit course supplement. By participating in these groups, facilitators' and participants' learning skills are enhanced, enabling them to gain a greater understanding of what they know and don't know. The skills learned are transferable and can by applied to other course work undertaken during their educational career.

From the beginning of the semester, students are permitted to sign up to participate in the Study Groups. Academic information, learning preferences, multiple intelligence and true colors assessment data are collected on each student at various stages of their time in the program. Facilitators are compensated for the time they spend with participants, preparation for study group sessions and meeting time with the project staff.

Study Group sessions are held a minimum of once a week. Each group is comprised of 5 to 8 participants and a facilitator. The purposes of the group is to improve the academic performance of the participants and to provide specific learning skills and strategies to help students achieve success in "difficult" courses.

The study groups are not tutorial sessions but cooperative learning experiences led by a peer facilitator. Study groups are available for the following courses:

· 212 Biochemistry
· N210 Anatomy and Physiology
· 210 Pharmacology
· N245 Pathophysiology
· N352 Maternity/Reproductive Health
· N354 Child Health and Illness
· N356 Adult Health and Illness
· N358 Mental Illness Across the Lifespan
· N452 Complex Needs
· N456 Community Health

Facilitators are upper classmates who have successfully completed the course they are facilitating. Facilitators are paid for their time with students. If you are interested in becoming a facilitator, read the Job Description for Peer Facilitators.
