Alterations in Brain Regulations
Hormonal Influences
Nancy Reame,
PhD, RN, FAAN
Dr. Reame is an infertility nursing specialist, reproductive physiologist,
and women's health researcher who conducts studies in two major areas:
the reproductive endocrinology of reproduction and menopause; and the
bioethical aspects of assisted reproduction. Her current work is testing
the theory that menopause starts in the brain, rather than in the ovary
where the gradual loss of eggs leads to a fall in estrogen. She is looking
at ways that aging may include changes in the hypothalamus, the part
of the brain that controls the hormone rhythms of the menstrual cycle,
which may actually trigger the acceleration of oocyte depletion that
begins after 35 and results in a dramatic decline in fertility. Her
additional research includes programs looking at reproductive endocrinology,
menstrual cycle, menopause, infertility, gender and health, and surrogate
pregnancy.
Nutrition
Bonnie Metzger, PhD, RN, FAAN, will assume primary responsibility for the educational efforts and initiatives in the Center for Enhancement and Restoration of Cognitive Function. As former Director of the Division of Acute, Critical and Long-Term Care Programs and coordinator of the School's Quantitative methodological Conference (Stats Camp), she is well positioned to spearhead scientific conferences. Dr. Metzger's research focuses on the interaction between life-style factors, such as exercise and nutrition, and cognitive processes and how these relationships affect health and illness. Currently, Dr. Metzger is exploring the therapeutic potential of nutrition and exercise for frail elders.
Depression
Bonnie Marie Hagerty, PhD, RN, CS, has been an Adjunct Clinical Nurse Specialist-Psychiatric Nursing in the Mood Disorders Program at the University of Michigan Hospitals for the past ten years. Her experiences there have enriched and focused her program of research. Seeing patients in this setting has allowed her to investigate essential issues of depression. Dr. Hagerty focuses on understanding clients' experiences of depression, including prodromal symptoms of recurrence, cognition and depression, interpersonal relationships and depression, and self-management of depression.
