Overview: The Michigan Center for Health Intervention (MICHIN) requests proposals for pilot studies that address intervention research. MICHIN is an NINR funded core center devoted to expanding investigators' capacity to develop and test health promotion/health restoration nursing interventions using a phased randomized clinical trial (RCT) model. Pilot projects that inform any phase of a RCT (I: feasibility; II: refinement; III: efficacy; IV: effectiveness) are appropriate.

Early in the application development, pilot PI's must meet with Dr. Donna Algase, Director of the Intervention Development and Measurement Core to discuss intervention specification, fidelity and measurement, and with either Rod Little or David Ronis , Director/Co-Director of the Design and Analysis Core to confirm design, power and statistical analysis plan. Also note videotapes entitled "HALLMARKS OF EFFECTIVE PILOT PROJECTS Part 1: The necessary Foundation for the Conduct of an RCT", and "HALLMARKS OF EFFECTIVE PILOT PROJECTS Part 2: Design and Analysis Issues" are available.

Funding up to $20,000 is available. Highest consideration will be given to projects that show greatest promise to advance the research trajectory of the Principal Investigator and that specify methods that involve nursing interventions. Up to three proposals will be funded as year 3 MICHIN pilots at the time the Center receives Year 3 funding. (Expected no later than June 1, 2007.)

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:

  • Established researchers who are advancing interventions to Phases II, III or IV
  • Established researchers who are initiating intervention work
  • Tenure track faculty
  • Research track faculty (50% or greater appointment in SN)

CRITERIA FOR PROPOSAL REVIEW:

  1. Focus: Development of a nursing intervention
  2. Significant & innovative topic
  3. Likelihood of advancing in phased RCT model to phase IV
  4. Promise to yield results that will support substantial future external funding
  5. Appropriate timeline (Typically one year; one extension may be requested)
  6. Appropriate budget within scope of proposed work

If this money will be used to leverage funds for an existing NIH project, please submit the project abstract. Funds from other sources may be used to supplement budget
