Black Cohosh for Hot Flash Relief

Study Information (press release)

This study consists of 6 study visits (3 outpatient and 3 inpatient) over a 4-month period to UM Hospital-General Clinical Research Center. The 1-hour outpatient visits involve questionnaires; the first one also includes a physical exam and blood draw. The 24-hour inpatient visits involve frequent IV blood draws, hot flash monitoring and sleep monitoring. A subset of 5 volunteers will undergo PET scanning (one MRI and two PET scans) during the inpatient studies.

Eligible volunteers will receive black cohosh (herbal supplement) for a total of 12 weeks. Compensation is up to $600. If you are one of the volunteers who undergo PET scanning, compensation is up to $1200.

Eligibility Criteria

  • ages 45-55

  • postmenopausal

  • experience daily hot flashes/night sweats

  • non-smoker

  • normal body weight (BMI < 30)

  • must NOT be on hormone therapy or medications that would interfere with hormone or PET scan studies

  • must NOT have significant psychiatric disorder, alcohol or drug
    dependency

  • must NOT have a history of breast, uterine, or other gynecological cancer

  • must NOT have sleep disorders

The Women's Health Research Project is seeking volunteers for a clinical study to determine whether a testosterone patch can bring relief to postmenopausal women who suffer from reduced sexual desire. To be eligible, you must:

  • be within the first 5 years after natural menopause

  • be on hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

  • be in a stable monogamous sexual relationship

  • not be on medications that may affect sexual desire such as anti-depressants, high blood pressure meds, androgen therapy, SERMs, DHEA, melatonin

  • not have a history of breast, endometrial, or other gynecological cancer, diabetes, stroke, heart attack, or unstable chest pain

  • Compensation is $500 for the completion of 11 visits over a 14-month period to the General Clinical Research Center of the UM Hospital. For more information, please call 734-936-3590 or email: jlc@umich.edu
