School of Nursing Committees
Committee on Academic Admissions and Scholastic Standing (CAASS)
CAASS is composed of the following members: The chairperson, a faculty of senior rank, who is elected by the faculty; five elected faculty representatives, at least three of whom are of professorial rank. Four student representatives (one from each of the baccalaureate, RN/BSN, master's, and doctoral programs selected by their respective student bodies; and one representative from The Office of Multicultural Affairs. Ex officio members without vote include the Director of Undergraduate and Non-Traditional Programs, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and the student advisor from the Office of Academic Affairs.
The Committee's charge is to:
- review and recommend for governing faculty approval, all admission, progression and graduation policies for the undergraduate and graduate programs; and
- to act on petitions for exception to admission, progression, and graduation policies.
Committee on Appointments, Promotions and Tenure
The Committee on Appointments, Promotions and Tenure (APT) is a standing faculty committee charged with the responsibility to review all initial appointments for consistency and compliance with University guidelines and School of Nursing requirements for appointments. Appointments are made to the appropriate instructional and research ranks and in the appropriate tenure and non-tenure tracks based upon the requirements of the position being filled, the individual's qualifications, documented recommendations and the approval of the Dean and Executive Committee with the final decision made by the appropriate University officials. Terms and conditions of every appointment will be confirmed in writing with a copy of the notification of appointment supplied to the appointed individual. At the time of the initial appointment, the head of the unit immediately responsible will see that the new staff member is appropriately apprised of the criteria and procedure currently in use in regard to appointment, reappointment or notice of non-reappointment, periodic review and evaluation, and promotion and tenure. The School of Nursing is committed to non-discrimination and equal opportunity in implementing its personnel policies. Appointments are made on the basis of individual merit and in the interest of furthering excellence in teaching, research and service.
APT is composed of five (5) tenured faculty members who are not voting members of the Executive Committee; three (3) shall be of Professor rank, including one elected by governing faculty as Chairperson, and two (2) of Associate Professor rank. In addition, the Chairperson shall appoint Research Scientists on an ad hoc basis when candidates are being considered for primary research appointments.
Curriculum Committee
The Curriculum Committee is composed of the Chairperson, Division representatives, member-at-large, three student representatives (one from each of the baccalaureate, master's and doctoral programs, elected by their respective student bodies); and one alumnus selected by the Alumni Association. Provision may be made in the standing rules for ex officio membership of Associate/Assistant Deans, the Director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs, and/or others, all without vote.
The Committee's charge is to systematically review and evaluate, at least every five years, curricular components of current undergraduate and graduate programs and recommend necessary changes; to review and evaluate proposed undergraduate and graduate curricular changes and recommend for governing faculty approval any changes which substantially alter approved curricula; to review and evaluate proposed curricula of new programs or courses and recommend to governing faculty for approval prior to submission for internal or external funding; and to develop curriculum policies for submission to the governing faculty and the Executive Committee.
Executive Committee
The Executive Committee is composed of the Dean and six professorially ranked faculty members. They are elected by the School's Governing Faculty and are appointed by the Board of Regents on recommendation of the President. The committee is chaired by the Dean. The charge of the Committee is to work with the Dean in matters pertaining to school-wide issues, policy and personnel decisions.
Human Subjects Review Committee
The School of Nursing Human Subjects Review Committee was reorganized in October 1995 and is now part of The University of Michigan centralized review system. See

for Use of Human Subjects in Research for information, background, application and training mechanisms. The appropriate committee, to insure the safeguarding of the rights of human subjects, must review all research proposals. All individuals involved with the conduct of research must undergo appropriate training.
Multicultural Committee on Diversity and Equity
The primary goal of the Multicultural Committee on Diversity and Equity (MCODE) is to develop, implement and evaluate a comprehensive diversity and equity plan for the University of Michigan School of Nursing. MCODE is responsible for creating the most effective responsive processes for ensuring the appropriate approval, responsibility, and accountability for the plan at all stages of its development. The committee has representation from the community and university faculty, staff and students. Appointments to the committee are made by the Dean.
