Viewing Attachments from Pine Email using Version 4.0 of the UM Internet Access Kit

Overview

Pine email itself is unable to view attachments. To view the attachments you must first save the attachment to a file in your IFS home directory then go in with an FTP program and retrieve the file.

Saving the attachment to a file in your IFS home directory

  1. Use Pine to open the email which contains the attachment.
  2. Press "V" to enter the attachment index.
  3. Select the attached file and press "S" to save it to a file
  4. At the bottom of your Pine screen a line will appear that reads: "Copy attachment to file in home directory:"
    1. If a file name appears to the right of this line just remember this name and hit "return".
    2. If a file name does not appear here give the file a name and hit return.
  1. Now hit "E" to exit the attachment index. You should now be back at your email message.

Retrieving the attachment through Rapid Filer

1. Click on the "Start" button. Go to "Programs", then "UM Internet Access Kit v4.0", then "HostExplorer", then "IFS Home Directory (FTP)" and click on it. This will start the program we will be using.

2. Now the program will start and a box labeled "Open Connection" will be opened. Under the "Server Name:" it should say "ftp.ifs.umich.edu" minus the quotes. (It will most likely already be there.)

3. Under "Username" type your uniqname and under "Password" type your Umich password. Remember that's not necessarily the same as your SoN password...it should be the one you use for email.

4. Leave all other fields blank (they should be already) and click on the "Open" button in the upper right corner of the box.

5. Now you should see two windows open. The one on top that is highlighted should say "youruniqname@ftp.ifs.umich.edu" at the top. This is your IFS directory. On the right hand side of that box you should see a listing of items in your IFS directory. Somewhere in there should be the file you saved in part one above. Locate this file now.

6. Now we want to move that file to your hard drive. Conveniently enough, the second window displayed by this program shows your hard drive. You should see your C:\ at the top of the directory structure. You should now find a location on your hard drive where you would like to put your file. Now you can just go back to the other window and click on the file and drag it and drop it into whichever folder you choose. (You may need to reposition the windows slightly so you can see both of them.)

7. Now your file should be moved to your hard drive!
