Why this change was done

We had to remap, i.e. change the letters for each, drive on the server. The reason for this is that "F" is no longer consistently available for a network drive. Local drives always get the first letters of the alphabet. Newer computers are coming out with "huge" hard drives that get divided into partitions. Other devices such as CDs and zip drives are using the front part of the alphabet too. So, the letter "J" is now the first letter that can be consistently used.

Major changes to notice from previous mapping

The biggest change you'll notice is that ***** your F:\ drive has become your J:\ drive and the G:\ drive has become your K:\ drive. *****

Your O:\ drive remains the same.

We'veimproved the "drop-box" security of the K:\drive. Within each individual's folder, there will be a folder called "dropbox." Anyone will be able to see the name, but not the contents, of all files in a drop-box. This allows the person copying a file into a drop-box ensure the copy was successful, but prevents anyone else from reading or manipulating the file. The drop-box is the only public space in secure folders. All other folders within a folder can only be seen by the folder's owners.

Because we had mapped most letters and were losing flexibility when people had special projects, we have consolidated some drives (i.e. H, I, K, R, S, T, W) under a shared drive. **** The L:\ drive is now the main shared drive containing labeled group folders. You will be able to see only those folders to which you've been given access.

The current drive S:\ is being moved to a folder in the L:\ drive.

Drive T:\ is now the temporary, shared space which is visible to all. We will periodically be erasing this space, wholesale. We will give one week's notice before we do this. Therefore, we recommend that you view it as very temporary. **** If you need shared space for a period of time, send a message to sn-its and we will happily create a folder for your project on the L:\ drive.
