The purpose of this case study is to help you become familiar with common
terms used in the OB clinic setting. The objectives for the leaning module
and the paper written prior to the outpatient experience are:
Define terms specific to the Brandy case and the assigned case study.
Identify common prenatal diagnostic and laboratory tests.
Distinguish in which trimester the tests are usually done.
Identify and discuss the teaching priorities in the outpatient case studies
that can impct changes in the behavior of obstetric patients.
How to use this module
You need to know all the information in this module eventually; at the moment,
however, it is most important that you:
can identify the “red flag” vital signs and
test results that indicate an immediate, serious threat to the health of
mother or fetus;
know where to find detailed information when you need
it; and
can identify and articulate risk factors to patients of
a variety of backgrounds in an effective manner.
The scenario
Brandy is a 41 year old, Caucasian, G8, T0, P0, A7, L0. She smokes 1 pack
cigarettes/day. She is currently 11 + 3/7 weeks pregnant. This is her first
visit to the clinic. She is blood type A-, ABS -, Rubella immune, HBsAg negative.
Her Hgb is 9g/dl, Hct is 26%. BMI= 25.0 Today’s assessment: BP: 108/62,
weight 149lbs (7 lb gain), + FHT, Urine is negative for glucose, protein, nitrates
and leukocytes.
